The morning dew of late summer is rapidly turning to frost. The leaves litter the garden where a short month ago grew lush grass. As nature dries and crinkles, preparing itself for winter hibernation, I can't help feeling my body is following suit. My summer suntan has faded,my rosy cheeks are no longer plump and fresh, but dry and itchy. My hair feels wiry no matter how much conditioner I use. Three weeks ago I sat outside in the warm afternoon sun. The following day I flew to Tromsø, Norway, situated 350km north of the arctic circle, at a latitude of just below 70 degrees north. Although it was less than a two hour flight, it catapulted me into winter. The first snows of the year fell the night I arrived and stayed with me through the duration of my trip. The northern lights were invisible through the cloud cover and the odd migratory whale that has started to journey into the fjörds stayed below the surface. I thanked my years of travelling for preparing me, or at least my wardrobe, for any weather. My Devold wool mittens and Nansen socks, my well-worn woollen hat and my cable sweater were all used, as was my favourite black silk dress that I travel with in case of a project interview, dinner date, or even an impromptu funeral. My clothing may have been appropriate but my skin and hair felt out of sorts. Returning home I packed away my summer skincare and went shopping. All the items that I didn't grow in my own garden were on my shopping list. Good quality honey, black loose tea, oranges and lemons, earth artichokes and cauliflower. There is nothing more beneficial than feeding ourselves from the inside out. Year after year I find myself writing the same blogs and articles, but like a black dress, this routine is timeless and a good investment. As Autumn grips us, lets embrace it fully. Slow cooked casseroles, home-made soups, warming spicy teas and fruity puddings. Walk them off with a daily dose of natural therapy. Dress in warm layers and bright colours, head outside and feel as close to nature as is possible. You can read several of my blogs on Forest Bathing and Natural Therapy here. Make time for yourself and reap the rewards.
Today's skincare comes from Roasted Cauliflower Soup enhanced with garlic, lemon and turmeric. Throughout the day I sip on a Thyme and Orange infusion with a touch of tea and black pepper.
